FAQ for campsite in Sussex

Yes you can and lots of campers do.

The address to use is:

The Lodge

Fox Wood

Selden Lane

Patching

BN13 3UL

Plan to have arrived at the campsite before your scheduled food delivery time and make sure that your mobile is on loud (and in your pocket) - as the delivery driver will call you once they arrive at the campsite reception - and request that you come to reception to collect your food.

TOP TIP: There are wheelbarrows available at reception to load your food shopping into. However many hands make light work so remember to enroll and bring some helpers down to reception to help you unload the shopping. Teenagers are great for this and seem to really enjoy it :-)

We have a charging station at the reception shop.

You can leave your phone here and the cost is £2 per device.

Just remember to bring a cable with you.

We have a USB hub to plug your cable in and kept locked in our shop when there are no staff around.

Yes - you can bring your freezer blocks to the reception shop.

The cost is 50p per block.

Please label your blocks clearly so that you can identify them at collection.

Try this great hack if you are camping for a few days.

  1. Plan your meals.
  2. Freeze any meat, cheese or milk that you are using on day 2 or 3 of your stay.
  3. Layer your cold box with your food in the order you are using it.
  4. Don't take your food out unless you need to.
  5. You'll find that the food will be naturally defrosted as you get to each layer.

Top tip:

Milk and cheese freeze.

They work like an ice freezer pack and you get to eat them rather than take up space.

We have great local beach at Goring.

Use this postcode to get to the beach BN12 4HR. This is the closest beach to the campsite and about a 15 minute drive by car.

It has free parking, big green spaces for picnics and a café with separate toilets.

The beaches are stone, but if you time it when the tide is out, you’ll get half a mile of sand with rock pools for the children.

Check the tide timetable for getting some sandcastle building time.

We always recommend to try and get an outgoing tide as you'll get more time on the sand and a chance to check out all the rock pools.

This is a great YouTube video showing you Goring Gap from the air.

Looking for some more sand, then we can highly recommend West Wittering Beach. This beautiful sandy beach gets very popular. You do need to pay for parking, which you have to do on arrival at a kiosk.

Use this postcode PO20 8AJ to get there and it takes about 45 minute drive from the campsite.

Get there early. When car park is full, they'll turn you away.

Just a short 10 minute walk from the campsite you'll find Culberry Nursery with a lovely shop and stocked with local produce.

It's definitely worth a visit while you're here.

Anyone hiring a glamping bell tent through an independent , would still need to book a woodland pitch through Fox Wood Campsite as well as booking the bell tent separately.

It’s also helpful when booking to put in the notes that you are thinking of a bell tent hire via an external company. This will help the staff on your camping weekend know if we should expect a bell tent company to be turning up at some point in advance.

Yes - We have two luxurious Emperor Tents for hire (the same look and feel as our 4 rental Bell tents - but with a bigger internal footprint to let you spread out). These tents are each located in their own private clearings - with space for one other family to join you (if friends are joining you they should book their own separate woodland pitch and advise us within the notes section on their online book that they are camping with you in the Emperor Glamping Glade).

Yes - the Fox Wood Campsite is all about relaxing in the forest and enjoying a campfire.

The woodland has been carefully organised so that each pitch has its own campfire area under the trees.

You will not share your campfire with people you do not know - and every campfire is large enough for families or gathering around if you are camping with friends.

Whisk away Modern-day Stress with lashings of Green Time Camping is the perfect opportunity to get a break from the busyness of everyday life and spend time getting close to nature. One of the easiest ways to really make the most of your camping trip is to try to limit screen usage. It is a great way to get a break from overloading your brain with information, whether on social media or the news, and to have more ‘green time’ to spend in nature. I always find that even if it’s just for a few days, a camping trip is the perfect reset: a break from all the stresses of normal life. Spending less time on screens A sure-fire way to reduce screen time when you’re camping is just to leave behind any technology you don’t actually need. Why not leave computers and laptops at home, as you don’t want to be checking emails or watching Netflix when you could be out on a walk or stargazing in the incredible UK countryside. You could also purposefully choose a campsite that doesn’t have Wi-Fi. A few less extreme tips are to keep your phone on silent and turn off notifications so you’re less likely to check it. Or to just keep devices in the tent or car so that they’re out of sight out of mind. If you’d like some more tips on reducing screen usage, as well as how you can keep this up at home, be sure to check out my blog National Unplug Day – Could you go Technology Free? Keeping kids entertained Although you may be motivated to try and reduce your own screen use on the camping trip, kids and teens may be less inclined to try out a weekend without their phones. One great way to keep kids engaged with the spirit of camping, is to let them bring some friends along. This means that they don’t need to spend as much time on their phones keeping in contact with friends, as they have their friends right there. You can also help to keep kids off screens by giving them lots of alternative engaging activities. Camping is perfect for this as there are endless activities for kids to do. They could play games outside- this is especially perfect if there is a big group of children. Some of my favourites used to be: 40/40 home- a classic game that kids of all ages can play and mafia- a fun and suspenseful ‘who dunnit game’, a quick google will help you familiarise yourself with the rules. Capture the flag is also great as it can be played at night. In my blog The magic of camping after dark, I go into detail about how kids can use torches to play this game at night. Sporting activities If you’re camping with sporty kids, you could bring a football and even some nets for a massive game of footy. Other sporty camping activities that are great fun for all ages are volleyball as all you need to do is put up a net, or you could bring along badminton bats and a shuttlecock. If you’re playing with a mix of abilities but people still want to run around outdoors, a frisbee or rounders kit is perfect. We also always have loads of fun with beach ball and bat sets, especially playing as a duo and trying to beat your personal best! Camping crafts Craft activities are another fantastic way to spend more time outside. If you bring along crayons, kids can make leaf rubbings. Just put a piece of paper over the leaf with the veiny side up and rub a crayon onto the paper. If you find some clay in the ground in your camping trip, this actually happens more often than you’d realise, or if you bring some clay with you, then camping is a great place for making sculptures. One of my favourite things to do is make faces out of clay in the trees, they look so beautiful and whimsical, and will decompose so you don’t damage the environment. If kids need some encouragement to spend time in the great outdoors, then why not organise a scavenger hunt. You could get them to try and find feathers, stones with holes in them, or to tick off certain bugs and animals they can spot. Or you could get kids to do a colour themed scavenger hunt, finding something pink, green, orange etc. if you’d like some more tips on camping activities for kids then check out my blog Keeping the kids entertained on your camping adventure. Bad weather forecast Don’t think that rainy weather signals the end of your chance to spend time in nature. Just make sure you always pack waterproofs for every member of your family (and loads of spare socks- trust me) and you’ll be able to carry on as usual, hiking and spending time in the countryside. Also make sure you have a good quality awning that the whole group can fit under, so you aren’t confined to the tent. If you’d like to learn more about how to not only survive, but enjoy, camping in bad weather- here is a general guide to camping in the rain. Family activities in nature One of the best ways to get the whole family out in nature is to go on a walk. Although people might take a bit of encouraging to head out on a hike, if you bring enough snacks and water and find a beautiful walk to go on, your family will be inspired by the awe-inspiring surroundings in no time. If your kids quickly get tired or bored when walking, I’d recommend finding a walk that ends in a pub so that everyone can have a nice meal to look forwards to at the end. Horse riding is another fun camping activity and if you find a nearby stable, they can take your family out on a guided horse-riding trip and provide all the necessary equipment. There is no better way to explore the UK countryside than from on top of a horse. Hiring bikes or bringing them yourself is another a great day out, and everyone will be super tired out by the end of it. You could also bring a picnic to have when you take a break in the middle of your cycle ride. Finally, at the end of the day, you can all sit around the campfire telling stories, toasting marshmallows and, if you’re lucky and it’s a clear night, looking at the stars!

Please note:

  • We only permit the burning of FSC approved logs - and these must be purchased from the campsite shop/log store
  • For the protection of the forest you are not permitted to bring any external wood for your campfire - as this increases the risk of killing or contaminating the woodland trees here with bugs and diseases bought in inadvertently of unchecked firewood.
  • For the protection of the Fox Wood forest - the picking up of sticks and foraging is also forbidden as this could potentially damage the habitats of the insects and fungi found within the woodland.
  • We ALWAYS have a good supply of firewood and lighting products to purchase from the reception shop.

Private hire for the woodland is only available when we are not open for camping.

You'll need to look at our calendar on the BOOKING page to see our camping dates.

If there's a date that you are interested in, please drop us an email at [email protected]

Fox Wood Campsite welcomes family groups.

  1. Decide on a really cool name for your group.
  2. Then when you book online, please complete the shared group name when booking.

This allows staff to know if you're camping with friends.

If your group consists of 4 families or more, then the staff will reserve a forest glade of a suitable size for your group.

This to so you can guarantee you'll be all camping together and sharing a campfire for your evenings.

Every forest glade is suitable for at least 3 families to share in standard tents and to gather around a campfire, without needing to have glade reserved.

Please note: We do not allow adult only groups.

We get asked this question a lot!

And obviously the sun needs to be out in the first place 🌞

If you're camping under trees in a woodland, then yes it will be shady.

But you certainly will get times of the day when the sun will pour down into the open glades.

The advantage is you won't get cooked in your tent at 5am as the sun comes up as you're not in the middle of a field.

You also get to feel like you are in your own natures room within the trees.

You'll be sheltered from the wind, sun and any chance of rain.

We do have a large meadow which is in full sun, to play games or just sit and picnic.

So this is definitely the place to hang if you love feeling the sun.

You cannot drive your car to your pitch at Fox Wood, however you can get very close :)

Fox Wood operates a car free policy within the camping ground - and this has many benefits for the camping visitors.

  • You will not have a unwanted car radio blasting out from a camping neighbour
  • You will not have a neighbour leaving their engine running for a prolonged period of time to pump up an air bed
  • You can be assured that your camping pitch is car free and therefore a safe place for your children - the cars are all contained along the central car parking track that bisects the camp ground.
Fox Wood Campsite central parking track

To help you you get your gear to your pitch we have 2 wheelbarrow bays - the first is conveniently located along the central car parking track, and the second can be found by reception where we sell logs (please always return your wheelbarrow to one of these allotted bays for other campers to use).

If you need or fancy help getting your camping gear to your pitch please talk to the reception staff - as we also offer a buggy transport service for a small charge.

We have....

Hot showers

Hot water sinks for washing up

Flushing loos and urinals

All available 24/7

Plus a small shop with fire wood, and sweets and ice cream.

We have a super amazing swing and an old school slide.

However the woodland is the children's adventure ground where they can play and make dens and just be children outdoors, making friends and having fun.

Please remember your children must be back at camp by dusk. It's not fair on other campers if children are roaming the campsite after dark.

Yes we allow up to 2 well behaved dogs per pitch booking at Fox Wood.

  • All dogs must be leaded or kept on a long leash whilst on site at all times (no exceptions) .
  • Please do not make us ask you to lead your dog whilst at Fox Wood.

There are lots of dog walking choices straight from the campsite gate out into the National Park Forest where you can tire out your four legged friend.

If your not heading out into the forest - the fields around the campsite have also got interconnecting footpaths and these often have sheep, lambs and horses in them, so please do not let your dog free roam in the farm fields if you cannot recall and control your dog around farm livestock.

Dog on lead

Want to go to a beach with your dog?

There are no dogs allowed on Worthing, Littlehampton or West Wittering beaches. These are all pleasure beaches.

Dogs are allowed on Goring Gap beach. Use this postcode to park BN12 4HR. This is the closest beach to the campsite.

It has free parking, big green spaces for picnics and a café with separate toilets.

The beaches are stone, but if you time it when the tide is out, you’ll get half a mile of sand with rock pools for the children.

Want to get a drink and something to eat with your dog?

Both our local pubs are dog friendly.

The Fox Pub, Patching - walking distance 5 mins

The Worlds End Pub, Patching - walking distance 15 mins

There are also a couple of cafes by the sea, but you'll need to jump in the car to get to these.

Sea Lane Cafe, Goring - 15 mins driving

Blue Bird Cafe, Ferring - 15 mins driving

We allocate a 5 x 6 m space for your forest camping tent pitch, but most of our forest glades will take up to 3 family tents sharing a campfire.

But, if you are coming on your own with 1 family then you will have lots of space to camp.

And remember...... you don't share your campfire with people you don't know.

Even though Fox Wood Campsite is a fluid camping environment, we ask that you let us know if your tent is larger than the pitch allocation.

In our booking system we remove a pitch for every large tent allocated.

Keeping Fox Wood looking open and spacious is super important to the feel of our campsite. Especially when we're fully booked.

Every camping pitch in the forest has sufficient space to accommodate up to 3 families.

If your group is 4 families or more then we will reserve a larger area for your group to pitch up and enjoy a campfire together.

If you and the other families are booking your pitches separately, then please pre-decide a group name for your group and place this in the notes section of your online booking - this will inform the campsite staff of the number of families in your group overall - and they can then allocate a pitch for your group that has suitable tent spaces to accommodate you and your friends.

You'll find an easy 3 step guide on the Campsite Dates page.

A picture of a camping glade at Fox Wood Campsite

For Group Bookings you have 2 options -

Option 1: You can either book and pay for the pitches together under a single booking. Just put the first family into the system. Once you have confirmed this booking, you will be asked if you want to add another family. Keep adding families until you have finished.

Or

Option 2: Contact your friends and ask them to book in independently through our online book facility – If you choose to separately book, the system will request a group name. Please agree on a group name in advance and put this in the box when asked during booking.

We pride ourselves on being a peaceful and family focused site - It is also important that you have read and are familiar with our Terms and Conditions as our South Downs National Park Location entails that visitors are not permitted to play electronic music at any time and the site has a quiet policy between 10pm and 8am (for the consideration of other sleeping campers - quiet or whisper talking around the campfire is acceptable after 10pm).
