Campfire Breakfast in Style

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and this is never more true than when camping. Trust me, nothing tastes better than breakfast cooked over a campfire. Don’t be daunted; it is surprisingly simple to make a fire to cook on!

The key to campfire cooking - the fire

This is covered in a bit more detail in the blog The simple pleasures – enjoy back to basics camping. However, I will also go over some of the most important points here.

Or check out How to light a campfire for specific step by step fire lighting tips.

Relight my fire!

Campfire cooking in the morning is easiest if you light a fire the evening before, put out your fire and turn the coals before you go to bed, then relight it in the morning.

As the coals will still be hot, your fire will be ready quickly, and so will your breakfast!!

Use a fire-pit if possible, but if not, make your fire on an area of bare earth, 4 meters from any tents, with a circle of stones around the fire to prevent it from spreading.

Don’t start cooking until your fire has become hot embers.

Actual flames will burn your food and blacken pots and pans.

Make sure you use sustainable dry wood for your fire and make sure your campsite allows campfires. Make a bed of embers by burning dry hardwood like oak, ash and birch. Best to buy from your campsite shop and never cut trees or collect wood without the land owners permission. When your embers are ready, place a grill over the top, resting it on the rocks, or on either side of your fire pit.

Now, let’s get onto the best bit –the recipes!

The magic of toast

Toast is possible. A piece of bread on a pitchfork over a flame or ember does the same job as a toaster, just a bit more slowly. After all, when you’re camping there’s no rush!

Another favourite is eggy bread (also known as the more classy ‘French toast’), a camping classic.

It is almost ridiculously simple. Just break some eggs into a bowl and mix them up with a fork. Then dip slices of bread into the egg mixture and fry them in a pan over your campfire.

Douse with generous helpings of ketchup or HP sauce (my personal favourite), or even with fruit for a super healthy start to your day.

Don’t forget the trusty staple: fried bread. Not having a toaster is the perfect excuse to make this decadent breakfast.

Simply butter both sides of a piece of toast and fry it on either side! Serve with jam, honey, peanut butter etc. or pile it up with fresh fruit and maple syrup.

If you can’t leave metropolitan living behind, top with smashed avocado, salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon for the classic avocado toast!

The famous fry-up

A full English makes for the perfect campfire breakfast! A breakfast for champions.

This is a fantastic one to make for a big group of hungry people. It is also great for campfire cooking as it can be made in only one pan (a heavy, high sided, cast iron frying pan or skillet works best for cooking on a campfire), or in batches if there are a lot of you!

Just fry up eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, sausages, hash browns, bacon- or whatever you feel like.

Then serve with bread or the fried version if you’re feeling really decadent.

Whip up some pancakes!

Make your own pancake mix of eggs milk and flour or, if you’re feeling lazy, buy it ready-made.

Pancakes are a fantastic celebratory breakfast, or can just brighten up a normal morning.

You could also add blueberries to the mix to make berry pancakes.

Serve them with fruit, maple syrup, lemon and sugar, yogurt, chocolate chips or nutella.

If you’re not in the mood for something sweet, then make savoury pancakes by scattering with ham, cheese, a pinch of black pepper and folding in half.

Tasty breakfast burritos

This camping breakfast is surprisingly easy.

Start by cutting up half an avocado and placing it on each wrap.

Then whisk an egg per person, adding chipotle paste and seasoning, (remember to pack these before you leave).

Fry halved cherry tomatoes until they have softened then add a handful of spinach or kale.

Push the greens and tomatoes to one side of the pan, and then scramble the eggs on the other side.

Once the eggs are cooked (it doesn’t take long!) share out the mixture between the wraps and enjoy!

Healthy, filling and delicious; this breakfast will set you up for the day.

Porridge!

Porridge over a campfire is the cosiest start to the day.

Place the oats in a pan over the hot embers and add milk or water.

Follow the instructions, adding water or milk to adjust the consistency to your own preference.

Top with whatever you feel like- fruit, nuts, seeds, honey.

It is also a perfect autumn/winter camping breakfast, warming and soothing for a crisper morning.
