Burgers and Hotdogs all round
No camping trip is complete without a classic campfire barbecue and burgers and hotdogs are the perfect barbecue food.
Barbecues are not only a super easy way to feed loads of people, but also a great way to start cooking over the campfire if you’d like a break from standing over your camping stove. As you can have meat, halloumi, veggie and vegan burgers all cooking at the same time, it is the perfect meal for cooking for many people with different diets.
You could let your campfire burn down to the embers and then place a grate over the top to barbecue on. Or if you have one, you could have the bbq on a portable barbecue. I find it easier to cook burgers and sausages on a disposable bbq, when I’m camping in a smaller group or backpacking.
Camping burgers
You can obviously buy burgers or meat cuts and then barbecue them at the campsite. But it is also really simple to make your own meat burgers.
To make pork burgers (or plant based burgers), add 40g breadcrumbs to bowl.
Then add 2 tbsp of water to soften, grate in half a red onion, 1 ½ tsp smoked paprika, 20g of parmesan or pecorino and finally the zest of half a lemon.
Then add 500g pork mince (or vegan mince) and mix everything together well, adding loads of salt and pepper and any other seasonings you feel like.
Shape them into round burger shapes, you should be able to make around 10 burgers.
Then cook over the barbecue for 2-3 minutes on each side, although it can take longer depending on the size of the burgers.

Camping hot dogs
Hot dogs are another great barbecue meal as they can be on the table in under 15 minutes.
Start by barbecuing some sliced onions and veggies over the campfire, then cook sausages or hotdogs on the BBQ. Or you could fry the hotdogs for a couple of minutes if you prefer.
Finally serve the hotdogs in rolls with caramelised onions, mustard, ketchup and veggies for a super quick dinner.
In our family we normally like to barbecue both burgers and sausages and then buy burger buns and hot dog rolls so people can eat whatever they feel like.
Halloumi burgers
As a vegetarian, one of my absolute favourite things to eat at a barbecue is halloumi.
Start by cutting the halloumi into 1cm slices, then cook on the barbecue until golden brown on the underside, flip the slices and cook again.
You can lightly toast the burger buns, then butter them on both sides.
Place some slices of halloumi in the burger buns, then slice an avocado thinly and serve the halloumi buns with the avocado, some salsa and ketchup.
Halloumi vegetable kebabs
Another great way to enjoy halloumi on the campfire barbecue is to make halloumi veg kebabs. These are a great healthy addition to your barbecue staples.
Just cut up some vegetables like courgettes, green, red and yellow peppers, onions and mushrooms into medium sized chunks.
Then cut some halloumi into similarly sized chunks- you want everything to be roughly the same size so the kebabs cook evenly.
Add the veg pieces and halloumi onto skewers and place onto the barbecue.
Allow to cook, turning frequently for around 10 minutes until all the veg has softened and the halloumi is golden brown. For a vegan alternative to these skewers, just replace the halloumi with tofu chunks.
Tofu steaks
To make these plant-based steaks slice a block of firm tofu into thirds and then in half each third to make 1 ½ cm thick pieces.
In a ziplock bag create a marinade for the tofu slices:
- 60ml soy sauce
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp maple syrup
- 2 minced cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp rosemary
- 1 tsp freshly ground pepper
- a pinch of salt
- a pinch of cayenne pepper
Allow the tofu pieces to marinate for 2 hours.
Then remove them from the ziplock bag- don’t throw away the rest of the marinade.
Grill the tofu over the barbecue for 6-8 minutes on each side until slightly charred and cooked all the way through.
Finally, brush the tofu pieces with the leftover marinade and serve with barbecued veggies in a burger bun.

Campfire veggies
One of the most underrated things about a camping barbecue is the campfire vegetables. They taste especially delicious when cooked over a campfire you have made yourself and enjoyed in the fresh air.
We like to put asparagus, spring onions and red peppers on ours, but you could also barbecue pineapple slices.
When actually serving up the burgers you can also add any fresh veg you have, such as sliced tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, gherkins, caramelised onions or grated carrot.
Another essential part of any barbecue is corn on the cob. To make the perfect corn on the cob, place the corn on top of the campfire and turn regularly until crispy and slightly charred on the outside. For an even easier way to cook the sweetcorn, you could wrap the pieces of corn in aluminium foil and put them in the embers of the campfire. Serve with a knob of butter- it’s simple but delicious. I also think that corn on the cob is unbelievably tasty with a slice of lime- just try it!
I hope you get loads of inspiration for what to cook on your campfire so that everyone can enjoy the barbecue, regardless of food taste or dietary requirements.
