Walkie Talkies For Camp Kids
Why not invest in a few walkie talkies for your next camping trip? They are inexpensive and great fun for you and your kids to play around with.
There are countless games to play with walkie talkies, both organised group games and imaginary ones they play between themselves.
Walkie talkies are also great for safety, as they can help you get in contact with kids when they wander a bit too far from the group. Remember to bring loads of spare batteries as there is nothing more frustrating than a walkie talkie that doesn’t work!
A bit about safety
Before I get into all the fun your kids can have with the walkie talkies, here’s the boring bit. It’s definitely worth discussing safety with them before you use the walkie talkies.
Make sure your kids know that if they wander too far then they will be out of range and will be unable to communicate with you. Also do loads of practices before you let them go off alone so that you can be sure they know how to use the walkie talkies properly.
You could even have a noise (such as a loud whistle) and get your kids to return whenever they hear it.
Hide and seek
This well-known game is a great one to play with walkie talkies, and there are a few variations for how you can play it.
You could play the game normally but give the people who have to hide the walkie talkies, and then get them to give directions to the seeker. This works especially well in areas such as forests that would normally be difficult to find anyone in.
However, it would also be great fun to play in the campsite itself, especially if the hiders give the seekers cryptic clues. You could also play the game with a few seekers who coordinate a search with walkie talkies.
Cops and Robbers
This is a game almost made to be played with walkie talkies. Why not teach the kids some actual radio codes. For example, 10-1 is ‘receiving poorly’, 10-2 is ‘receiving well’, 10-4 is ‘okay, got it’ etc.
You can look up more radio codes online, they’ll add a lot of fun to the game!
You could give walkie talkies only to the cops side of the game so that they can coordinate how to catch the ‘robbers’.
Or, if you have enough walkie talkies, both sides can have them to make for a very strategic game.
Capture the flag
If you have never played it before, capture the flag is a great group game in which two teams try and steal a flag from another team’s territory and bring it into their own territory to win. All you need for this game is a large space, and anything to use as flags (when I was a kid we used to use footballs, or torches if it was darker).
For a more detailed explanation of how to play capture the flag in the dark, check out The magic of camping after dark.
The addition of walkie talkies means that the teams can strategize and communicate with each other whilst trying to steal the flags. This is a great game that is often won by decoys and clever plans, and your kids will come back very happy (and out of breath) after playing it.
Imaginary games
Walkie talkies are perfect for kids who love to play imaginary games. Leave them to their own devices and see what imaginative worlds and scenarios they come up with.
With the walkie talkies they could be explorers, superspies, villains, firemen, soldiers or anything else they feel like!

Explorers
The kids don’t need to pretend, they can be actual explorers with their walkie talkies! Walkie talkies will give older kids an opportunity to be independent and explore the countryside, without you worrying that you can’t get in contact with them.
If you have gone on a walk, why not see if your kids can work out a different route back to the campsite, using the walkie talkies to communicate with you. Just make sure they don’t go off alone, and that they keep an eye on their surroundings, so they don’t get lost.
Also means they are not using their phones. Win Win.
You could also get them to make a den or bivouac and to report in with updates on how they are doing. Or ask them to radio in when they’d like you to check their final masterpiece.
Safety
If your kids are prone to wandering off, or get lost easily, then walkie talkies can mean you have a much more stress-free camping experience.
They will help you get in contact with your kids, especially if there is no phone service in your campsite (as there often isn’t) or if they are too young to use phones.
Practice with tech
Another great thing about taking walkie talkies on your camping trip is that it gives kids the chance to practice using the tech. I can remember when I was a child that the way the walkie talkies worked seemed so confusing.
It helps kids with navigation and communication skills, as they will often have to give directions, and explain where they are in a clear way that someone else can understand.
Walkie talkies are a great addition to your camping pack for so many reasons. I can still remember playing with walkie talkies in forests as a child, and I am sure that your kids will never forget all the fun they have with walkie talkies either!
So, make sure you put these in your inventory when making a list of what to pack when camping with kids.
